Barberton is one of the largest communities in Summit County. It is considered a commuter town of Akron, which is located approximately 9 miles northeast of Barberton. Barberton was intended to be an industrial city, designed by a man named O.C. Barber who decided the town would be built around the 10-acre spring-fed Lake Anna in the center. Barberton is the center of research for Babcock & Wilcox and other renowned corporations. The commerce base of Barberton is stable, with a variety of jobs available in education, health care and technology. The city has a multitude of million-dollar partnerships to revitalize schools, infrastructure, roads, and recreational facilities, including parks.
Barberton is known as the Chicken Dining Capital of the World, as the city is home to four non-chain chicken eateries, which have attracted national attention and visitors from around the world. The Alexander Square Historic District in the heart of Barberton is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is home to restaurants, small and large retail shops, historic theaters, and more. The community is dotted with a collection of 16 neighborhood parks including the crown jewel, Lake Anna, which has a gazebo, places for fishing, and paved walking trails. The lake’s park is the site of Barberton’s most popular events and festivals, including summer concerts, the Mum Fest, Arts & Crafts Festival, and the Cherry Blossom Festival. The Towpath Trail, which is considered Northwest Ohio’s most coveted recreational feature, winds through Barberton along the Ohio and Erie Canalway.
Barberton is served by Barberton City Schools, which operates Barberton Elementary West, Barberton Elementary East, Barberton Middle School, and Barberton High School. Additionally, residents may access the many private schools throughout the region. While there are no institutions of higher learning in Barberton, there are a number of colleges and universities in Akron, including the renowned University of Akron.
